International visitors have an easier time connecting to the web than anyone else on the island because they can afford it and because the best connections are at resorts and hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuba is a communist island, meaning the government controls the island\u2019s resources, including the Internet. The Cuban Internet is run by a state-owned company called Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba (ETECSA). Here are the options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Option 1 &#8211; Public Wi-Fi hotspots (requires the NAUTA card)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 2 &#8211; Hotels and resorts (might require the NAUTA card)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 3 &#8211; Rent Nauta Hogas from your host<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 4 &#8211; Airports (requires the NAUTA card)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 5 &#8211; ETECSA Internet salons (requires the NAUTA card)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 6 &#8211; Get the Cubacel Tur SIM Card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 7 &#8211; Buy or rent SIM cards from international providers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 8 &#8211; Rent a SIM card from your host<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Option 9 &#8211; International roaming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before diving into each option to access the Internet in Cuba, let&#8217;s introduce you to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etecsa.cu\/en\/internet\/nauta-account\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">NAUTA card<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A NAUTA card lets you have WiFi and Internet access in Cuba&nbsp;at any of the following places:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Public WiFi hotspots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major airports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hotels and resorts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Desktop computers at ETECSA offices (these are called \u201cSalas de Navegaci\u00f3n\u201d. See the full list <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etecsa.cu\/en\/rooms-public-spaces\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy your NAUTA card at any of Cuba\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etecsa.cu\/en\/us\/commercial-network\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">ETECSA offices,<\/a> although some hotels and resorts sell them too. Be prepared to wait in a long line; recent visitors have reported waiting up to 2 hours at the ETECSA office in Havana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how much does a NAUTA card cost? A 5-hour card costs 125 CUP, and a 1-hour card costs 25 CUP. Don\u2019t forget: you\u2019ll need your passport to buy the card!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"epcl-shortcode epcl-box information\"><i class=\"epcl-icon fa fa-eye\"><\/i>The Cuban Peso (CUP) is the primary currency in Cuba. You will need to use Cuban Pesos for most of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourepublic.com\/blog\/trip-to-cuba-cost\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">expenses in Cuba<\/a>. If you buy a NAUTA card from a \u201cprivate\u201d seller, expect to pay an inflated rate. We don\u2019t recommend this option!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-option-1-public-wifi-hotspots-requires-the-nauta-card\">Option 1 &#8211; Public WiFi hotspots (requires the NAUTA card)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To access the WiFi in Cuba, you must go to a designated spot to connect via WiFi. Web access is limited to those places instead of being widely available, like in North America or Europe. Most of these locations are in urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, if you are exploring the country&#8217;s countryside or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourepublic.com\/blog\/backpacking-cuba\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">backpacking the island<\/a>, public WiFi hotspots may not always be available. This is where your NAUTA card comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you get your ETECSA NAUTA card, you\u2019ll have to scratch it on the back to get a login code and password. Type in your login information when prompted, and then click accept. Voila! You won\u2019t accidentally waste any of your pre-paid WiFi minutes on idle time by logging off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To log out, first type 1.1.1.1 into your browser\u2019s search bar. When prompted, click \u201ccerrar sesi\u00f3n\u201d to log out. Wait for the confirmation notice to make sure the logout was successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you could also disconnect from the WiFi signal, and you\u2019ll be automatically logged out. If the connection is bad and you\u2019re struggling to log out, disconnecting from the network may be your only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Save your minutes: always remember to log out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-option-2-hotels-and-resorts-might-require-the-nauta-card\">Option 2. Hotels and resorts (might require the NAUTA card)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of Cuba\u2019s upscale hotels and resorts have free WiFi and cable Internet through desktop computers available for guests. This is a popular option to get Internet in Cuba for tourists. They need to pay a monthly subscription, so it is not free and very limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a price, your host may be willing to share their username and password with you. With access to a Nauta Hogar account, you can connect in your room, public hotspots, and airports!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-option-4-airports-requires-the-nauta-card\">Option 4 &#8211; Airports (requires the NAUTA card)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NAUTA cards are also available at Cuban airports, where you can connect to the WiFi in Cuba. At ETECSA Internet salons, known as &#8220;Salas de Navegaci\u00f3n&#8221;, you can buy the NAUTA card and connect to the Internet using the desktop computers available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a popular way for Cuban residents to access the Internet in Cuba, so be prepared for long lines!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find your nearest &#8220;Sala de Navegaci\u00f3n&#8221; through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etecsa.cu\/en\/rooms-public-spaces\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">ETECSA&#8217;s directory of Internet salons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like public hotspots, Internet salons may have limited capacity and reduced operating hours during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-option-6-get-the-cubacel-tur-sim-card\">Option 6 &#8211; Get the Cubacel Tur SIM Card<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etecsa.cu\/es\/visitantes\/cubaceltur\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">Cubacel Tur SIM Card<\/a> is a temporary phone line for tourists offered by ETECSA. It lasts for 30 days. The basic package starts at 25 USD, including 2.5 GB of data, 20 minutes of international and national calls, and 20 SMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before landing in Cuba, you can buy the Cubacel Tur Card through <a href=\"http:\/\/cubaceltur.com\/#providers\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">ETECSA&#8217;s authorized providers<\/a>. Once you arrive, you should pick up the card at Terminal 3 of Havana Airport at the Cubatur booth. You can also pick up the card at any of ETECSA&#8217;s offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to acquire the card in advance, though, since the card is available to buy at most of ETECSA&#8217;s offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few other caveats about the Cubacel Tur Card that you need to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It only lasts 30 days, and you cannot extend the duration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can acquire it only at ETECSA&#8217;s authorized providers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suenacuba.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">SuenaCuba<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cubacalls.de\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">CubaCalls<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recargasacuba.com\/en\/tourist-sim-card-cuba\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">RecargasCuba<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must contact the providers directly if you want to cancel the service. ETECSA won&#8217;t cancel it!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may upgrade your package, but you will only receive more mobile data to up to 12 GB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may need your phone to be unlocked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The line is not transferable, so forget about giving it as a gift to your new friend in Cuba.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-option-7-buy-or-rent-sim-cards-from-international-providers\">Option 7 &#8211; Buy or rent SIM cards from international providers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like to plan (or don\u2019t like the idea of dealing with ETECSA), a few websites out there will sell you Cuba SIM cards ahead of your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onesimcard.com\/cell-phone-rates\/cuba\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">OneSimCard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cellomobile.com\/sim-cards\/cuba.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">Cellomobile<\/a> are two popular sites to buy or rent SIM cards for the Internet in Cuba for tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OneSimCard prices: Incoming calls $0.65\/minute; outgoing calls $1.25\/minute; free incoming SMS text messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cellomobile prices: Incoming calls $2.19\/minute; outgoing calls $2.19\/minute; free incoming SMS text messages; outgoing SMS messages $0.49\/each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-option-8-rent-a-sim-card-from-your-host\">Option 8 &#8211; Rent a SIM card from your host<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mobile phone users who want to access the web can rent a SIM card in Cuba. Instead, you can use other popular messaging tools like WhatsApp and Facebook messenger while in Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some visitors like to use VPNs to access blocked websites and keep their private data while in Cuba.
